At long last, residents in the Ashanti Region can sleep easy. One unnamed informant however will sleep soundly with the knowledge that his good deed and exercise of his civic responsibility has netted him Gh¢ 5,000.
After an almost two-year-long search for notorious criminal, Baba Musa, Ashanti regional police today have finally captured the elusive armed robber.
On the run after jumping bail in 2013 for earlier crimes, the armed robber continued to terrorise citizens, which earned him a well-deserved place on the Police Command’s most wanted list and a GH¢5,000 bounty on his head.
Speaking to Joy News, Ashanti Regional PRO, ASP Mohammed Tanko, revealed that the brazen man, who is alleged to have been involved in robberies from as far back as 2011, was arrested at Nkawkaw.
He declined to offer more information on the location, stating that investigations were currently ongoing to find out if any persons had been sheltering him there.
ASP Tanko explained that in 2013, Musa was released from remand prison on bail, which he immediately jumped, and that he quickly returned to his criminal activities.
According to the police PRO, the impunity with which Musa was terrorising people, inflamed the Regional Command’s determination to capture him.
The police PRO said it took about three months after the police declared the reward, for the information which led to the arrest to be provided.
He revealed the criminal was known to threaten people into keeping quiet about his activities which led to people being wary about coming forward, adding that Musa was notorious for shooting a man in the eye and a journalist in both legs.
He said the Police received some tip-offs which proved unsuccessful, after the bounty was declared, but that the tipoff about the Nkawkaw hideout proved accurate.
The brave informant has since been given his reward.
ASP Tanko said that Musa was arrested peacefully; there was no exchange of fire. He attributed this to the fact that Musa had had no prior warning of their swoop and that he was unarmed at the time of arrest.
Responding to questions of the recent jailbreak in the Ashanti Region, the PRO said that after the jailbreak, security in the prisons have been tightened and cells secured. He assured the general public that there was no way that Musa would escape their custody.
He thus prevailed on witnesses to crimes perpetrated by Musa to come forward to identify him and assist the police put together an air-tight case against him.
